The royal palaces built into Portugal’s Sintra Mountain Range are evidence of the Catholic country’s Islamic past. Although today, less than one percent of the population practices, the country was under Muslim control until the 13th century.

We got up (kind of) early and took the train from Zermatt up to Shwarzsee, then hiked down the Matterhorn trail past Riffelsee Lake, over a minimalist suspension bridge that challenged ones balance, and through the cow pastures and old wood/stone roofed cottages resting just above the city.
